Rangoli is derived from sanskrit word 'rangavalli' . It is an Indian form of art made with coloured sand, flowers and coloured rice on the floor mainly during festivals like Diwali, Pongal, gudi padva, Onam and other indian festivals. The purpose of rangoli is decoration and it is thought to bring good luck. Rangoli has several names like in Tamil Nadu it is called Kolam, in Rajasthan it is called Mandana, in chattisgarh it is called chowkpurna, in West Bengal it is called alpana, muruja or jhoti or chita in odisha, in Bihar it is called aripana, in uttarpradesh it is called chowkpujan, muggu or muggulu in Andhra pradesh, Gholam in Kerala and in Uttarakhand it is called aipan.
