Lost Worlds is a documentary television series by The History Channel that explores a variety of "lost" locations from ancient to modern times. These "great feats of engineering, technology, and culture" are revealed through the use of archaeological evidence, interviews with relevant experts while examining the sites, and CGI reproductions. These visual re-creations take the form of rendered 3D environments and photo manipulated overlays, allowing the "lost world" to be seen over its present-day state. The pilot episode "Palenque: Metropolis of the Maya" was first aired on April 4, 2005. It was followed by 12 more episodes in 2006, and a further 19 episodes in 2007.

Why are there so many flowers? According to Charles Darwin, evolution occurs slowly through natural selection. Because of his theories, he called flowering plants “an abominable mystery”! How’s that for describing flowers? 10. Diversity at the Equator Today, it’s common knowledge that the closer you get to the equator, the more diverse life becomes. Lush, tropical forests bursting with life are synonymous with equatorial regions, after all. 9. Phytoplankton Phytoplankton are organisms that live in large bodies of water. This class of creatures include a variety of different subspecies, and they are everywhere. However, their diversity poses a bit of a problem. According to theories of evolution, there shouldn’t be so many varieties. The lack of resources should make it impossible for a large variety of organisms to survive in an ecosystem without killing each other off. 8. Animals That Don’t Need Oxygen We are taught in school that oxygen is required for life. However, that isn’t exactly true. There are organisms that do not need oxygen and scientists can’t really explain how they can exist. 7. Gelatinous Rain In 1994, a jelly-like substance rained from the sky onto the Washington town of Oakville. Anyone there when that happened??? According to urban legend, dozens became ill with flu-like symptoms and pets even died. Supposedly, scientists analyzing the substance found two types of bacteria, one of which is commonly found in the human digestive system. 6. Right Hand vs Left Hand The majority of humans are right-handed. The percentage of left-handed people is somewhere between five and thirty percent. (A wide range I know). There are people who are ambidextrous but there are no statistics on how many. 5. Why do we dream? Dreams are steeped in lore and legend. Some believe that a dream has important things to say about our lives, desires, and perhaps even our futures. Others believe that dreams are only random images. What does science say about dreams? Not much. 4. Viking Test Results In 1976, NASA sent two probes named Viking 1 and Viking 2 to Mars. When they arrived, they performed three experiments. These experiments were supposed to determine if life existed on the Red Planet. One such experiment was called the Labeled Release apparatus, which tested for microbes in the soil. 3. Missing Lithium You are probably already familiar with lithium because of lithium batteries. However, this element is a perplexing question for scientists. Why? Because there should be a whole lot more of it! 2. Dark Streaks on Mars During warm seasons, there are dark streaks on the surface of Mars. Once the weather becomes colder, the streaks disappear. It was an exciting observation, as it suggested that there was water on the planet. However, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter didn’t detect any water. That is, until 2015. 1. Humpback Whale Super Groups Humpback whales normally congregate in small groups, even in migration. Usually, it’s in groups of 3-4 maximum because they are usually solitary animals. However, in 2017, scientists discovered that these marine behemoths were forming supergroups between twenty to two hundred individuals!! Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!
Check out these pets you should never release in the wild! From goldfish to other wild animals, these exotic pets become an invasive species and get the wildlife into trouble! Green Iguanas Iguanas are a popular pet for collectors of exotic animals because of how cute they look and supposedly they are easy to take care of. Unfortunately the idea that they are simple to look after was likely spread by those who sell them, because they actually need a strict environment and diet to survive. They can also be difficult to tame and handle, especially when they are fully grown, and this has led to a large number being released into the wild. They are naturally from central and south America, and thrive in warm environments. This has meant that those released in similar climates, such as those found in parts of California, Florida and Hawaii, have thrived and begun to breed. This has been detrimental to the local ecosystems where they compete with native species for food, and will prey on species that haven’t adapted to deal with these kind of threats. As a result, Iguanas are illegal to own in Hawaii because of the potential devastation and havoc they can cause on the islands. In Florida, the populations of feral iguanas have caused extensive damage to vegetation and local wildlife, so if you do decide to get one please be a responsible owner and don’t release them into the wild!. 9. Cuban Tree Frog These cute frogs are a favorite of exotic species collectors, but the Cuban Tree Frog is causing serious issues across Florida. They are quite difficult to identify among other frog species, something that is made even more difficult by the way that they can change color. They are originally native to Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, and are thought to have been first introduced to Florida in the 1920’s. It’s the recent popularity of keeping them as pets, though, that has led to an explosion in their numbers in the wild as a result of collectors releasing them. Cuban Tree Frogs are an aggressive species that feed on at least five different species of native Floridian frogs, as well lizards, small snakes and tadpoles. They are also able to survive in urban areas, and will take over birdhouses, ponds and birdbaths where they lay their eggs. They have been responsible for massive changes in the ecosystem, and have even been known to affect humans by causing power outages?? They are a danger to environments where they aren’t native, and so must not be released under any circumstances. 8. Rabbits Rabbits are another incredibly popular pet for owners around the world, but when they are released into non-native environments they can cause serious damage. The best example of this is in Australia where they were released for hunting in 1859. Only 24 were set free, but by 1920 there were an estimated 10 billion across the country. There have been numerous attempts to curb the population growth, but with their speed of breeding, ability to feed on most vegetation, and overall resilience, rabbits still roam Australia in huge numbers and pose a threat to many of the natural species like the bilby and burrowing bettong by taking over their burrows. 7. Goldfish/Carp They may seem harmless enough, and are a popular pet for adults and children alike around the world, but releasing your pet fish into the wild can have disastrous consequences for your local environment. Nowhere has this effect been seen more clearly than in Australia where the problem has gotten out of hand. Notorious for their strict rules on bio-containment, it’s why Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got in trouble for allegedly sneaking in their dogs. The Australians have good reason for being that way. In 2016 researchers from the Murdoch University in Perth caught goldfish that weighed up to 2kg and were up to 30 centimeters long. These large animals are thought to have descended from a small variety that were being kept as pets and released into the wild a few years before. By feeding on more food and disrupting the ecosystems, these fish can spread and cause significant damage by off all the native species. Goldfish the size of dinner plates have also been found in Alberta, Canada, and have led to fines of $100,000 dollars to those that release non-native species into the wild. Angler Raphael Biagini captured a legendary “giant goldfish” out of a lake in the south of France. Fellow fishermen had spent 6 years trying to capture this orange koi carp weighing 30lbs. The only way this fish ended up in the lake, was because someone was trying to get rid of it.

Blood Falls Because of its remote location and inhospitable environment, there’s a lot still to be discovered in Antarctica. One feature that’s been a mystery ever since they were found are the blood falls in the Mcmurdo Dry Valley. Pouring from the Taylor Glacier, the water is a deep red colour, and has an average temperature of only 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit- well below the freezing point of 32! 9 Clicking in Stockholm Harbour In 1981, a Russian submarine, armed with a nuclear warhead, entered Swedish waters near a naval base. At the time it was blamed on an accidental navigation error, but since then, the Swedes have kept a careful listen out for any more intrusions into their territory. 13 years later, in 1994, acoustic devices picked up the tell tale sign of a vessel, with a series of metallic clicking noises being heard near Stockholm harbour. 8. The City of Troy The ancient city of Troy was the focus of Homer’s “Illiad”, where it lay under siege for more than 10 years before finally succumbing to a Greek army being led by King Agamemnon. Troy is famous for the beautiful Helen of Troy, Achilles, and the horse. Many stories have been told of the place, but the site of the true ancient city of Troy is located to the northwest of Turkey. 7. Mass Whale Graveyard In 2011, during a road widening project in the Atacama Desert of Chile, builders stumbled across a mass graveyard, but it wasn’t what you might expect. It was full of the bones of whales, strange walrus-faced dolphins and sloths all lying side by side. The fossils were found to be about 6 to 9 million years old, and it became a mystery as to why so many animals would die in one place together, and how it would happen in a place that was 130 feet above sea level. 6. The Bloop In 1997 a loud, ultra-low frequency sound, which became known as the “Bloop” was heard on hydrophones across the Pacific. It was so loud, in fact, that it was picked up by listening devices over 3,000 miles apart. The problem was, no-one had any idea what could make such a noise, and for the next decade there was much debate about its cause. 5. The Easter Island Statues Easter Island is one of the remotest inhabited islands in the world, more than 1,600 miles away from the nearest town. Ever since the first explorers visited the place, it has stood out for one main reason- the 887 Moai, giant statues of heads that are placed around the coast. 4. The Mary Celeste For more than 100 years the story of the Mary Celeste has baffled people. After the ship failed to arrive at port, search parties went to find it, and discovered it completely empty, with no sign of a struggle. But why would a crew abandon a seemingly fine ship, what could possibly convince them to do this? 3. The Wandering Rocks of Death Valley Racetrack Playa, a desert lake bed that lies in the mountains above Death Valley, has been the site of an extraordinary phenomenon- rocks that seemingly move by themselves. For decades, no-one has been able to explain how the rocks traverse the surface, leaving a trail in their wake. Some suggested it was caused by wind or rain, or perhaps even people moving them. It was only in December of 2013, though, that the truth came to light. 2. Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart was a aviation pioneer, and became the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. She would go on to attempt a number of different challenges, but on July 2nd, 1937, she went missing, without a trace, in the Pacific while flying from Papua New Guinea to Howland Island as part of an attempt to fly around the world. 1. The Bermuda Triangle The Bermuda Triangle is undoubtedly one of the biggest mysteries ever, but in recent years the superstition surrounding the region has been debunked. It’s the part of the Atlantic Ocean between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico- and supposedly has been the site of many plane and ship disappearances. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!
The evidence is OVERWHELMING that what we were taught in school about ancient human civilization, particularly about the Ancient Egyptians is FAR from accurate, specifically that, our true history was far older, and advanced than we ever thought possible… And the most recent scientific evidence further demonstrates that the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt WAS NOT a tomb built for the Pharaohs, but is literally a massive technological structure that is beyond our current understanding. You may have seen the news articles that reported on a recent study Published in the Journal of Applied Physics, which was conducted by researchers and Physicists from Germany and Russia, which provided scientific data based on calculations which showed that the Great Pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy inside of its internal chambers as well as under its base and inside the subterranean chamber. The significance of this discovery cannot be overstated, because we NOW have scientific data which supports that the Great Pyramid of Giza was a technological structure of some kind. 10. It’s the Island of Santorini
A common view is that Atlantis was actually part of Santorini, a small island in the East Mediterranean that was partly-destroyed by the mighty Volcano of Thera in 1646 BC. Yeah, a looong time ago. Geologists have suggested that if you reconstruct the island of Santorini, you can see that this complete version, before it was destroyed by the volcano, used to be Plato’s mysterious island of legend!
9. The Black Sea
Some are happy to believe that Atlantis was just a made up story of legend. But others believe it was a real place. Not only that, but it was actually something else. The theory of Atlantis being located in the Black Sea region is a great example of this. It all centers on the rise of ocean levels following the last Ice Age.
8. Under Antarctica
Atlantis is usually believed to have somewhere warm, possibly around the Mediterranean, and you’d probably need your sunscreen (if it had been invented yet). However an American historian thought the truth was very different. And colder! Prof. Charles A Hapgood went on record in the 1950s as believing the mythical island was in fact, part of Antarctica.
7. Is It Based on Truth?
Atlantis is often portrayed as being the perfect society, a peaceful utopia that was very technologically advanced. However, if you look at where the legend started, in Plato’s dialogues written in 330 BC, he describes a place that is just like any other.
According to him, it was a technologically advanced society that was wealthy, and had a very powerful military but it was also corrupt. He claims that Atlantis battled against the city of Athens who came out the hero.
6. It was founded by Lemurians
An old idea about Atlantis is that it’s connected to the lost continent of Lemuria. Lemuria was believed to be located in the Indian or Pacific oceans but their continent sunk due to volcanic activity. They were beings who could travel between dimensions by altering the matter in their bodies. Plate tectonic theory and the existence of other continents strongly discount that this ever existed.
5. Lost in the Bermuda Triangle
Plato talks about how Atlantis was swallowed by the sea in a single day. Even so, you’d think that over the centuries someone would have stumbled on something concrete to prove the island existed right? Well this kind of happened in the late 1960s.
4. It’s in the Bahamas
If you’re in the United States then Atlantis may be closer than you think. To be more precise it could be 50 miles east of Miami! There lies the island of Bimini, part of a chain of islands in the Bahamas. Just 20 feet (6m) under the water there are some mysterious stones which could show the existence of Plato’s fabled kingdom.
3. Founded by Aliens
You know I couldn’t leave this theory out, since so many people out there actually believe this stuff, no thanks to Ancient Aliens on the History Channel! Supposedly aliens landed on our planet in its infancy and helped in the development of our ancient cultures, one of which was Atlantis.
2. It’s in Morocco
A German computer genius named Michael Hübner came up with a unique approach to finding Atlantis in 2008 when he gave a presentation at the Atlantis Conference in Athens. Others had taken an archaeological approach or used mysticism to locate Plato’s fantasy island.
1.Plato Made It Up
I’m sad to say that the most realistic theory is that Atlantis was made up by Plato, the Athenian philosopher who first told the world about it. Plato lived between 424-328 BC. The legendary island with an advanced civilization was described in his Dialogues titled ‘Timaeus’ and ‘Critias’ which were written around 330 BC.
