Islands throughout the world that are shrouded in mystery! From Mexico's creepy Island of the Dolls to the Naval Base on Diego Garcia the histories of these islands are full of myths and secrecy. #9. “Island of Socotra”- Off the coast of Somalia in the Indian ocean is an island that seems as though it belongs on another planet. Socotra Island has long been theorized as a location for the biblical Garden of Eden, and just by looking at pictures of it you can see why. The island is home to several species of plants that are can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. There are the Dr. Seuss looking Adenium socotranum which have big bulbous trunks and tiny gnarly branches that sprout from their tops and bear flowers that are a marvelous shade of pink. There odd appearance makes them kind of look like giant root vegetables. Then there are the Dragon’s Blood Trees which look like perfect natural umbrellas. The have trunks that resemble that of an average tree but their thick tightly bunched branches shoot upwards and form a mushroom like crown. Socotra is also home to three geographically unique species of bird: the socotra sunbird, socotra grosbeak and socotra starling. There aren’t many other creatures that inhabit the island other than that of bats and insects and the last time it was home to man was around the year 100 A.D. Adding to the mystery, the island has been the site of dozens of shipwrecks over the years. #8. “Palmyra Atoll”- Though technically not an island but an atoll that formed from coral the mysterious nature of Palmyra Atoll cannot be ignored. Also known as Palmyra Island, the breathtakingly beautiful ringlet sits between American Samoa and Hawaii. Though it is full of lush vegetation and appears unblemished by man the island has long be the subject of superstition and folktales. There have been several cases of violent shipwrecks and mysterious disappearances of ships on and around the island. Those who have observed the island and survived to tell their tale have claimed having seen some extremely bizarre sights like that of floating lights, ghosts and sea monsters. It is also reported to be the home of an incredible amount of sharks who may have developed a distinct taste for humans. There is also the story of lost Incan treasure that may still be on the island. These tales and others which cannot be discussed do to their graphic nature have made Palmyra the stuff of legend amongst sailors and Pacific Islanders for centuries. #7. “Vulcan Island”- Vulcan Island in the Philippines isn’t necessarily an island that is shrouded in mystery but it definitely is a mindblowing locale. On the northern Philippine island of Luzon there sits a lake named Taal and in that lake there is an island called Taal Volcano, inside this island is the world’s largest crater lake and inside of this lake there sits yet another island, known as Vulcan Island. Not only is Vulcan Island one of the most fascinating of natural recursion it happens to be located on one of the most active volcanoes in the entire Pacific Ocean. Because of this fact it is incredibly dangerous to visit Vulcan Island as it has been quaking and bubbling consistently since 1991.
Atlantis, a likely mythical island nation mentioned in Plato’s dialogues “Timaeus” and “Critias,” has been an object of fascination among western philosophers and historians for nearly 2,400 years. Plato (c.424–328 B.C.) describes it as a powerful and advanced kingdom that sank, in a night and a day, into the ocean around 9,600 B.C. The ancient Greeks were divided as to whether Plato’s story was to be taken as history or mere metaphor. Since the 19th century there has been renewed interest in linking Plato’s Atlantis to historical locations, most commonly the Greek island of Santorini, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption around 1,600 B.C. Plato’s Critias says he heard the story of Atlantis from his grandfather, who had heard it from the Athenian statesman Solon (300 years before Plato’s time), who had learned it from an Egyptian priest, who said it had happened 9,000 years before that. Whether or not Plato believed his own story, his intent in telling it seems to have been to boost his ideas of an ideal society, using stories of ancient victory and calamity to call to mind more recent events such as the Trojan War or Athens’ disastrous invasion of Sicily in 413 B.C. The historicity of Plato’s tale was controversial in ancient times—his follower Crantor is said to have believed it, while Strabo (writing a few centuries later) records Aristotle’s joke about Plato’s ability to conjure nations out of thin air and then destroy them. Atlantis Reemerges In the first centuries of the Christian era, Aristotle was taken at his word and Atlantis was little discussed. In 1627, the English philosopher and scientist Francis Bacon published a utopian novel titled “The New Atlantis,” depicting, like Plato before him, a politically and scientifically advanced society on a previously unknown oceanic island. In 1882, former U.S. Congressman Ignatious L. Donnelly published “Atlantis: The Antediluvian World,” which touched off a frenzy of works attempting to locate and learn from a historical Atlantis. Donnelly hypothesized an advanced civilization whose immigrants had populated much of ancient Europe, Africa and the Americas, and whose heroes had inspired Greek, Hindu and Scandinavian mythology. Donnelley’s theories were popularized and elaborated by turn-of-the-20th-century theosophists and are often incorporated into contemporary New Age beliefs. From time to time, archaeologists and historians locate evidence—a swampy, prehistoric city in coastal Spain; a suspicious undersea rock formation in the Bahamas—that might be a source of the Atlantis story. Of these, the site with the widest acceptance is the Greek island of Santorini (ancient Thera), a half-submerged caldera created by the massive second-millennium-B.C. volcanic eruption whose tsunami may have hastened the collapse of the Minoan civilization on Crete.

Griffins Scythians were nomads and warriors, and some of The first people to master war on horseback. Over 1,000 years ago they were searching for gold in the vast Gobi Desert of central Asia. In the heat of the desert while mining for gold, the miners not only battled the blazing sun but also the mighty griffin: A fierce mythical creature that was half-eagle, half lion that guarded fantastic treasures of gold. Greeks wrote down the stories of travelers who reported having heard of these great battles between the Scythians and Griffins and Brought back evidence of these large beaks and bones that proved that this had to be true. Millions of years before humans arrived in the Gobi, some parts of the desert were home to strange animals that Seemed to combine body parts of eagles and lions. But these animals weren't griffins--they were dinosaurs. Certain areas in the Gobi are littered with dinosaur bones, including those of The four-legged, beaked Protoceratops. For thousands of years, Protoceratops fossils, like the one pictured here, could regularly be seen eroding out of hillsides. Ancient gold miners working in the desert may have seen these fossils--and Tried to come up with a rational explanation of what that animal must have looked like. Probably pretty terrifying!! 5. Cyclops There’s An enormous amount of stories with cyclopes littered throughout mythology. I also just learned the plural form of cyclops was cyclopes. From getting their eyes jabbed by Odysseus to Hercules uppercutting them to the moon, to the new God of War games, where Kratos tears out their eyes by the dozen. The point is, cyclopes are everywhere, and the ancient Greeks are to blame. But ancient Greeks were Unfamiliar with the idea of massive animals that no longer existed, and many believed that the enormous bones they found were the remains of human-like giants. Any nonhuman traits in the bones were Thought to be due to the grotesque anatomical features of giants. Those skulls that spawned the very myth of the one-eyed giants weren’t cyclopes skulls at all. They belonged to an Ancient elephant-like species known as Deinotherium giganteum, and it looked like this. If you see this skull, what are you supposed to think? If that's what the skull looks like, what if you come across a live one?? The “eye socket” in its skull is really where it's trunk was, and it’s hard to imagine something so simple being the reason that myths about the cyclopes first started. The ancient Greeks took the idea of these skulls and ran with it, Telling stories of giants, describing them as flesh-and-blood creatures who lived and passed, and whose bones could be found coming out of the ground where they were buried long ago. Even today Large and surprisingly human-like bones can be found in Greece. Modern scientists understand these bones to be the remains of mammoths, mastodons, and woolly rhinoceros that once lived in the region. The long bones of elephant relatives and humans are Similar enough to be confused. Geological events tend to destroy the skulls of prehistoric elephants, leaving only enormous, human-like long bones, ribs, and vertebrae. Ancient stories often Reported finding the remains of giants hundreds of feet tall--much bigger than an elephant or any other animal. These reports may represent attempts to reconstruct the bones of several animals found jumbled together as a single giant. The people of Tingis (modern-day Tangier, Morocco) once Boasted that their city's founder was a giant named Antaeus who was buried in a mound south of town. To test the claim, Roman soldiers dug into the mound in 81 BC. Much to their surprise, an enormous skeleton surfaced-- which they then reburied with great honors. Modern scientists confirmed that it was an ancient elephant fossil. 4. Unicorns These majestic creatures Symbolize all that is pure and good in the world and possess magical power. While no unicorn remains have been found, in 1663 a German archaeologist decided to Create a unicorn skeleton using mammoth and rhinoceros bones. His work, which he claimed was a true unicorn skeleton, was eventually discovered to be false but stories of unicorn sightings persist to this day. Unicorns have been seen in Scotland, and A unicorn lair has been reportedly found in North Korea. While most admit unicorns to be a creature of pure fiction, some continue to insist that they do or did exist.

10. It’s the Island of Santorini
A common view is that Atlantis was actually part of Santorini, a small island in the East Mediterranean that was partly-destroyed by the mighty Volcano of Thera in 1646 BC. Yeah, a looong time ago. Geologists have suggested that if you reconstruct the island of Santorini, you can see that this complete version, before it was destroyed by the volcano, used to be Plato’s mysterious island of legend!
9. The Black Sea
Some are happy to believe that Atlantis was just a made up story of legend. But others believe it was a real place. Not only that, but it was actually something else. The theory of Atlantis being located in the Black Sea region is a great example of this. It all centers on the rise of ocean levels following the last Ice Age.
8. Under Antarctica
Atlantis is usually believed to have somewhere warm, possibly around the Mediterranean, and you’d probably need your sunscreen (if it had been invented yet). However an American historian thought the truth was very different. And colder! Prof. Charles A Hapgood went on record in the 1950s as believing the mythical island was in fact, part of Antarctica.
7. Is It Based on Truth?
Atlantis is often portrayed as being the perfect society, a peaceful utopia that was very technologically advanced. However, if you look at where the legend started, in Plato’s dialogues written in 330 BC, he describes a place that is just like any other.
According to him, it was a technologically advanced society that was wealthy, and had a very powerful military but it was also corrupt. He claims that Atlantis battled against the city of Athens who came out the hero.
6. It was founded by Lemurians
An old idea about Atlantis is that it’s connected to the lost continent of Lemuria. Lemuria was believed to be located in the Indian or Pacific oceans but their continent sunk due to volcanic activity. They were beings who could travel between dimensions by altering the matter in their bodies. Plate tectonic theory and the existence of other continents strongly discount that this ever existed.
5. Lost in the Bermuda Triangle
Plato talks about how Atlantis was swallowed by the sea in a single day. Even so, you’d think that over the centuries someone would have stumbled on something concrete to prove the island existed right? Well this kind of happened in the late 1960s.
4. It’s in the Bahamas
If you’re in the United States then Atlantis may be closer than you think. To be more precise it could be 50 miles east of Miami! There lies the island of Bimini, part of a chain of islands in the Bahamas. Just 20 feet (6m) under the water there are some mysterious stones which could show the existence of Plato’s fabled kingdom.
3. Founded by Aliens
You know I couldn’t leave this theory out, since so many people out there actually believe this stuff, no thanks to Ancient Aliens on the History Channel! Supposedly aliens landed on our planet in its infancy and helped in the development of our ancient cultures, one of which was Atlantis.
2. It’s in Morocco
A German computer genius named Michael Hübner came up with a unique approach to finding Atlantis in 2008 when he gave a presentation at the Atlantis Conference in Athens. Others had taken an archaeological approach or used mysticism to locate Plato’s fantasy island.
1.Plato Made It Up
I’m sad to say that the most realistic theory is that Atlantis was made up by Plato, the Athenian philosopher who first told the world about it. Plato lived between 424-328 BC. The legendary island with an advanced civilization was described in his Dialogues titled ‘Timaeus’ and ‘Critias’ which were written around 330 BC.
