After successive defeats to Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo La Coruna, Michael Owen, Roberto Carlos and Ivan Helguera gave Real's title aspirations a much-needed boost as they made the most of Barcelona's goalless draw with Espanyol on Tuesday. Edu netted for Betis in the second half but the Andalucians never really looked like threatening Real's hold on the game. With Raul suffering from flu, England striker Owen started up front alongside Ronaldo, while Santiago Solari came in for the injured Zinedine Zidane in midfield. Betis, starting the game in sixth place, were deprived of midfielder and free-kick specialist Marcos Assuncao, who was suspended after being sent off at the weekend against Valencia. Benjamin stepped in to cover. Their winger Joaquin Sanchez demonstrated why so many clubs, including Real, are after his services as he surged past four defenders on a 25-yard sprint into the area just two minutes into the game. Unfortunately, his finishing did not match up to his approach play as he scooped his shot weakly into Iker Casillas' hands. Betis continued to look much the sharper side with the pace of Joaquin and Ricardo Oliveira constantly threatening Real's backline, but it was the home side who took the lead after 10 minutes. Owen looked to be well covered at the near post as Solari's left-wing cross arrived at the striker's feet. But the ball somehow squirmed past Owen and Betis defender Juanito, allowing the Englishmen to swivel and stab the ball under keeper Antonio Doblas from six yards out. The former Liverpool marksman nearly added a second soon after when David Beckham's corner was flicked on by Luis Figo, but he headed over the bar from close range. The goal settled Madrid and they tightened their grip on the game five minutes before the break when Roberto Carlos added a second. Betis defender Melli dispossessed Ronaldo, who was bearing down on goal, but his tackle was adjudged a backpass when Doblas gathered the ball. Real were awarded an indirect free-kick in a central position, just outside the six-yard box. A solid line of green and white shirts were no match for Roberto Carlos' famous left foot as he thundered home a shot past the despairing keeper. Soon after the restart, Thomas Gravesen sent Owen scampering clear but with just Doblas to beat, the striker skied the ball over the bar. Ronaldo then burst through and fired against the post, but the lurking Owen failed to make clean contact with the rebound. Betis pulled a goal back against the run of play in the 60th minute when Edu spun past Walter Samuel in the area and fired in a fierce rising shot which beat Cesar Sanchez, on for Casillas. Chances of a Betis fightback were quickly extinguished as Helguera restored the two-goal cushion a minute later, rising to loop a header over Doblas after a weak clearance from a Beckham corner was nodded back into the area. Ronaldo, who has not scored since January 16, was barracked by the crowd as he failed to make the most of some good passes towards the end of the game.
